Security

Any network administrator discussing "security" these days would obviously include the deployment of antivirus and antispam software as part of the conversation. There are many manufacturers who, on the face of it, offer a reliable solution in these areas, allowing the typical network administrator to relax, having fulfilled their obligation to ensure networks are protected.

Sadly, as threats become more malicious and sophisticated, traditional "reactive" solutions such as those signature-based solutions currently deployed, are no longer adequate. These new threats exploit vulnerabilities in endpoint devices. They include attacks by Trojans used to install malicious code, and attacks with code utilising "rootkit" techniques to allow hacking.

Fortunately, software developers have been able to respond with advanced solutions offering endpoint security measures that can protect against zero day attacks and unknown threats. In addition, these solutions offer sophisticated interoperability, seamless implementation and centralised management. Rather than employing traditional reactive techniques, they employ proactive technologies which purport to analyse application behaviour to block suspicious activities, and deploy the necessary patch.
