Job summary

The Senior Project Manager is an individual with experience running complicated projects across a wide range of technology streams in an organisation providing consultancy and technology services as a key supplier.  They are responsible for the end-to-end project management and professional implementation of IT business solutions and will have a proven record of success. They may also take responsibility for delivery of a programme of work for a client, reporting and managing a programme view.  Strong team work and analytical / problem solving skills are required to ensure effective delivery of these projects.

They will plan and resource a wide variety of customer projects, liaising internally with members of the Professional Services Group and Sales Teams and externally with customers and third party suppliers.  They will be responsible for building and maintaining strong working relationships with the client representatives and all team members and will be capable of managing expectations and understanding political issues.

Throughout project planning and project implementation it will be the responsibility of the Project Manager to provide information on progress to the customer, project stakeholders, Account Manager and all other staff as necessary.

The Senior Project Manager is expected to be an effective, authoritative leader who inspires confidence and respect from the internal teams, customers and suppliers. An effective Senior Project Manager goes beyond traditional Project Management skills. They build strong interpersonal relationships and convey personal effectiveness to achieve their goals.

Accountabilities and main responsibilities

The main responsibilities are detailed below, although the post holder would also be expected to perform any other duties which might reasonably be required by the business.

  • Identify internal and external resources, whether financial or human, in order to deliver the project successfully
  • Accept and close projects in distress or which contain significant management on client sites.
  • Support the Delivery Services Manager in coaching and mentoring other Project Managers in the tools and techniques suitable for projects in flight
  • Evaluate the progress of project on regular basis and take proactive steps to resolve any risks or issues
  • Set realistic and practical goals for the project. Moreover, they should also develop appropriate strategies for achieving these goals.
  • Manage the commercial aspects of the project both in terms of the client and internal Finance procedures, remaining cognizant at all time of the commercial status of the project.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to the team members about every aspect of the project so that the team members can understand their tasks fully and act on them efficiently
  • Initiates and flags investigation of issues arising in Project Management engagements
  • Supports “continual improvement” of self and the team
  • Develop and execute an efficient internal communication strategy for ensuring communication with all levels of management within the team

  • PRINCE2 Practitioner (or equivalent)
  • Breadth and depth of knowledge and business acumen obtained from previous experience of project and programme delivery
  • Persistence and resilience in seeing a project through to completion
  • Practical and hands on approach to delivering outcomes
  • Ability to form and maintain solid working relationships
  • Self-motivation and self-sufficiency, with excellent time management skills and the ability to manage a demanding workload and conflicting priorities
  • Ability to learn new information quickly and keep up with rapidly changing products and processes
  • The ability to communicate effectively and professionally, with the confidence and gravitas to build working relationships at all levels, both internally and externally
  • Integrity, honesty and reliability
  • A flexible, creative approach, with the ability to find innovative ways to overcome project obstacles
  • Willingness to travel, with occasional overnight stays
  • Experience of a variety of industries, public or private sector
