How a VAM Service helped two large healthcare organisations consolidate and transform
Background to the project
This large acute healthcare provider was established through the merger of two individual healthcare organisations in the south east of England, which created a complex IT estate. They wanted to consolidate the estate to reduce costs, mitigate security risks and optimise their licensing position.
It was vital that they found a partner who could provide a comprehensive review of their existing estates to understand the legacy processes, platforms and infrastructure. They also wanted consultative support on the best way to integrate the software requirements of the organisations into a single strategy.
The aim was to optimise their IT estate and create the right foundations to build their future digital health strategy.
The Solution
Trustmarque provided professional service consultancy to look at the customer’s entire IT estate. This included our comprehensive Virtual Asset Manager (VAM) Service, powered by Snow.
The VAM service gives organisations greater control of their software assets and aims to realign IT departments with the needs of rest of the business to drive software maturity and deliver long-term operational efficiencies.
Included in the service is Prism, a dynamic analytics service driven by Microsoft Power BI and unique to Trustmarque. It takes complex information from multiple sources and brings this together via a series of dashboards to provide easy access to meaningful information that supports business decisions about your IT estate.
About the customer
The customer is a large acute healthcare provider which serves around 900,000 people across three hospital sites in an area of south east England.
“We have achieved more in three months than we did in three years.”

Outcomes and Feedback
The customer achieved their requirements for strategic direction, consolidation and visibility. They have total visibility of their software estate to make intelligent decisions on their current spend and roadmap. For example, gaining clarity around migrating certain applications to the cloud.
Our contact, an IT Asset and Software Compliance Manager, comments: “The work with the ITAM Consultants at Trustmarque went extremely well and we have achieved more in three months than we did in three years.
“Our core objective was to look at the whole estate and understand what needed to be done. We have hit that objective. We have a much more accurate position of our licensing and have drastically reduced our ‘at risk’ status by about two thirds, which is a significant amount of finance. Thanks to Prism, we can immediately access information to identify software that is not being used and areas that we can save money. It allows us to report more precisely on what Snow is seeing whereas previously I had to look across multiple pieces of software.”
The customer reported that Trustmarque has been an invaluable partner in helping to smooth the integration of two IT teams which has been a long and complex process. They are happy to be in a “much better position moving forward”.
Key Benefits
- Total visibility of entire software estate
- Licensing position optimised to reduce spend
- Reduction of ‘at risk’ status by almost 70%

Why Trustmarque was selected as a Partner
Trustmarque had Enterprise Licensing Agreements with both organisations, and they were confident we were best placed to consolidate this into a single agreement on their behalf. Not only thanks to our history and knowledge of the customer but also thanks to our intricate knowledge of Microsoft licensing.
In addition, we had already provided a Virtual Asset Management (VAM) Service to one side of the business before the merger and they recognised the value in extending this across the new consolidated group.
We are a highly respected partner of many healthcare providers, possessing deep knowledge of the intricate challenges the sector faces and are passionate about enabling better outcomes and patient care through digital transformation. The customer recognised this commitment and the value Trustmarque could bring to key priorities like cloud-based infrastructure and Microsoft 365.
Next Steps
With the licensing position improved, the next big objective is to reduce all software costs. The customer will continue to work with Trustmarque on a new Snow agent and to leverage Prism to access more critical business information about their users’ software needs.
This supports their ongoing migration to Microsoft 365. By working with Trustmarque, they have started to profile their users to determine what software is needed so we can ensure they get the most out of their Microsoft 365 investment.
Confirming their intention to continue to work with Trustmarque on the next stage of their transformation and consolidation, our contact, an IT Asset and Software Compliance Manager, added: “Trustmarque has deep experience in both software and licensing, but they also have a unique depth of customer knowledge. This means they can identify things we might not have thought of, like Prism. And the ability to knowledge share using best practise from other customer projects is key.”
“Thanks to Prism, we can immediately access information to identify software that is not being used and areas that we can save money. It allows us to report more precisely on what Snow is seeing whereas previously I had to look across multiple pieces of software.”
