About the Award

According to CRN Channel Awards, the Covid-19 category aims: “to give some much-deserved recognition to those companies that have gone out of their way to help keep this country running during the most challenging conditions we have experienced in living memory. This award is to celebrate that innovation and raise awareness of some of the fantastic initiatives and projects that the channel was involved in during the heart of the crisis.”

The winners will be announced via a virtual award ceremony taking place online on 12 November.

About Trustmarque Virtual Desktops for Health

When the Coronavirus pandemic hit the UK in March 2020, organisations everywhere were forced to close their doors and employees asked to work from home. However, for many on the frontline, remote working was at best difficult, at worst impossible.

A significant issue was providing seamless connectivity to existing applications and processes for clinicians at home. The healthcare sector urgently needed a way to support its valued staff and to connect patients with GPs and clinicians in a safe and secure way that would ease the pressure on the health services, allowing the community to access vital patient care. All at a time when it was needed the most.

Trustmarque immediately recognised we could make a difference and established a cross organisation project team between Trustmarque, Microsoft, and healthcare partners in Nottingham, East Midlands and London.  In just a few intense weeks, we developed, trialled, and tested Trustmarque Virtual Desktops for Health: a remote-based, full access virtual desktop solution that enabled healthcare professionals to deliver critical patient services safely from home.

Harnessing the power of Microsoft Azure, Virtual Desktops for Health gives registered healthcare professionals secure, instant access to familiar healthcare applications so they can run a remote clinic safely from home. Users can view patient records and appointment requests, carry out consultations, issue e-prescriptions and manage referrals. They can also easily connect with colleagues across the clinic or practice – bringing teams together virtually.

‘Beyond the call of duty’ expected of an IT partner

“The achievement is a credit to the capabilities of Trustmarque and the determination of the NHS Team driving a vision.” Mike Press, NHIS

Commenting on the nomination, Mike Press, Chief Technical Officer at Nottinghamshire Health Informatics Service (NHIS), who was a core part of the NHS project team, said Trustmarque went above and beyond to get a workable solution as fast as possible.

He commented: “When Covid-19 hit there were many new challenges and constant demands that put our IT staff and systems under pressure as never before.  Having partners to turn to for immediate assistance was essential and Trustmarque was one of those who went beyond the call of duty with a fast, flexible response.  They helped us implement a novel VDI solution in Azure in just a few weeks by working in true partnership with an agile, collaborative approach and delivering a solution that many thought simply wasn’t possible up in the cloud given the complexity of NHS clinical systems.

“It’s often said that the private sector aren’t flexible and won’t work without really defined scopes, time simply didn’t allow for this, design, build and test informed the next day’s steps. The achievement is a credit to the capabilities of Trustmarque and the determination of the NHS Team driving a vision. Equally the public sector are known for not taking risks with new technology, but in this case we put all that aside and made a real difference to Primary Care and Out of Hours services to help keep them working.”

He went on to say that the project changed the NHIS perception of Trustmarque from a reseller to an “agile services provider” and that he looks forward to having Trustmarque as a partner to call on in future.
