NHS Trust Azure Virtual Datacentre & SQL PaaS Migration
A Trustmarque and Microsoft collaboration to design and develop an appropriate Azure environment for an NHS Trust to migrate priority SQL databases approaching end of support. Drawing on Trustmarque’s deep knowledge of the healthcare sector and expertise in Microsoft Azure datacentre deployment, to ensure best practice migration in line with the latest NHS Digital blueprints for cloud-based design, security, and implementation.
About the customer
The NHS trust is one of the largest NHS Trusts in England, employing more than 15,000 members of highly skilled staff and serving one million residents. The Trust’s internationally renowned specialist treatment and services in cardio-respiratory diseases, ECMO, cancer, and renal disorders reach a further two to three million patients nationwide. The Trust is heavily involved in and committed to international research to push the boundaries of health and surgical procedures. Each year the Trust works on around 1,000 clinical trials with many different organisations throughout the world.
About the project
The Trust is undergoing significant infrastructure modernisation as part of its journey to hybrid cloud. As part of that strategy, the Trust has spent a lot of time and effort on due diligence, including an assessment review of its entire IT infrastructure. The findings identified various security risks in unsupported operating systems and SQL servers. It also highlighted that many SQL servers were underutilised.
The Trust decided to migrate some of these SQL workloads to Microsoft Azure to determine the viability of a wider migration programme that would reduce the on-premise estate. The vision was to transform their SQL workloads from Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) to Platform as a Service (PaaS) to achieve the cost reductions and operational savings of consolidating in Azure public cloud.
Because the Trust has a complex IT environment with different operating models and varying needs across the organisation, it was crucial they work with a partner who could understand the complexities and dependencies to create a datacentre that is “fit for purpose”. There were three key considerations in selecting a partner: to guarantee security was at the heart of the project; ensure alignment to the principles and blueprint set out by NHS Digital; and leverage best practice methodologies from Microsoft.
Large Services organisation Windows Server Migration to Azure
A Trustmarque and Microsoft collaboration to develop a virtual datacentre environment and Windows Server migration to Microsoft Azure for a Local Public Services provider. The customers on-premise, private cloud datacentre was migrated to Azure as part of a cloud-first strategy.
About the customer
The Local Public Services provider delivers a wide range of specialist services to local authorities, schools, academies, and other public sector organisations in the UK. Their services include IT and digital transformation, customer management, finance, property development, regulatory services, education support, and back office processing. The organisation employs approximately 150 staff in the UK.
About the project
The Local Public Services provider is on a journey to achieving a cloud-first approach to its digital transformation. Part of that vision is to redesign all datacentre infrastructure with a view to migrating on-premise workloads to the cloud.
Within the last two years, the organisation began to refresh its datacentre. The process involved building a new service comprising of Windows and Linux virtual machines, which were hosted on dedicated on-premise hardware within its datacentre.
They recognised the benefits of migrating those environments to public cloud, including greater cost savings, scalability, and agility. The organisation determined Microsoft Azure could provide the freedom and flexibility needed to offer additional services, removing the long lead times associated with expanding or modifying legacy on-premise infrastructure.
The customer needed a strategic partner to help manage the design, build, and deployment of a virtual datacentre in Microsoft Azure – to provide the consultancy and technical expertise needed to manage a complex end to end migration. And as such, they recognised Trustmarque’s extensive experience in helping customers to adopt Azure public cloud and to reap the benefits of infrastructure modernisation.
